Breaking the Laws of Everything

The (?) Motorist

R.W. Paul, Great Britain, 1906

Paulís renegade car begins by breaking the laws of man and the roadóit runs over a policeman. Then it proceeds to defy the laws of physics, ascending into space and taking a turn around the rings of Saturn (right). Finally it returns to earth to make a mockery of that sanctuary of laws, the courtroom (center). Moreover, when allís said and done, the car and its occupants get away scot-free (left). Although itís primarily a demonstration of special-effects ingenuity, The (?) Motorist also appears to be a modest declaration of the potential power of technology, whether automotive or cinematic, to change the rules of everything.
