“Mephisto Méliès”

Méliès, who drew sketches for many of his costumes, sets, and special-effects figures, created the costume and makeup for his Mephistopheles in the sketch on the left. He made his first appearance as Faust’s nemesis in 1897, in the three-reel Le Cabinet de Mephistophélès (Laboratory of Mephistopheles) and reappeared later the same year in the first of his Faust adaptations, Faust et Marguérite (bottom right). He played the role of the devil’s deputy so often that he sometimes referred to himself as “Mephisto Méliès.”
