Time and Again (II)

The Kleptomaniac

Edwin S. Porter, Edison Manufacturing Co., USA, 1905

Even though the climax brings them together in the same courtroom (right), Porter tells his two-part story, each about a woman who’s caught stealing, in sequential order, the first episode being completed before the second begins. On the left, a poor woman is apprehended stealing a loaf of bread to feed her children; in the center, a banker’s wife is caught shoplifting at a department store. The former is hauled off to jail, while the latter is released as a harmless neurotic.
