A Spectacle of Role Reversal

La Scarabée d’or (The Golden Beetle)

Segundo de Chomón, Pathé-Frères, France, 1907

An old Arab sorcerer has conjured a “dragonfly” woman by throwing a golden beetle into a cauldron. In a single spectacular tableau, the cauldron is transformed, first, into a fountain that pulses forth streams in a rainbow of colors and, then, as shown here, a whirling fireworks display. Finally, it becomes an iron bowl, into which the woman (with the help of two lovely companions) imprisons the magician.
